A couple of new nonfiction books that caught my attention (and held it) as I walked by a cart of new books here at the annex:

How Strong is it? A Mighty Book About Strength by Ben Hillman.  Spiderwebs, ox, cars, lasers, this book describes how strong these things are in terms kids can understand, and uses pictures!  Did you know that wood is so strong that a single 4 inch square post of black locust wood could support your whole house??

100 Most Dangerous Things on the Planet by Anna Claybourne. What are your chances of surviving a fall into a volcano and what should you do if it happens?  What causes frogs to fall from the sky and what should you do if that happens?  Answers to these and many more interesting questions have you prepared for whatever natural disaster you might encounter!

Two new titles that I want to draw your attention to are:  Finding the First T. Rex and The Curse of King Tut’s Mummy (on order,) both by Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld.  These titles are part of Stepping Stones’ True Stories series.  They are nonfiction titles with high interest and low reading level.  I think kids, especially nonfiction lovers, will really enjoy these titles.  Don’t let these get lost in your stacks!

If you’re looking for a high interest-lower reading level book, check out the Jake Maddox sports books. I ordered 4 of the 8 at the beginning of the year and I can see they are circing well, so I just ordered the other 4. They have a mix of male and female characters and some interesting sports. The most popular right now are Paintball Invasion and Storm Surfer. The publisher lists the interest level as grades 4-8 and the reading level as grades 2-3.
