And the Winner is…

January 11, 2010

OLA and WLA had their joint Mock Newbery workshop on Saturday.  It was a great day.  We had participants from as far away as the Seattle area, Spokane, and Eugene.  The workshop featured two current Newbery committee members, including the current Newbery Chair (!), and past Newbery committee members.  We had an explanation of Newbery criteria, an overview of what it’s like to be on the committee, and a Q & A with past and current committee members.  First we had small group discussions and voting and then we gathered as a large group and voted again.  The eight books we discussed and voted on were:  Almost Astronauts by Tanya Lee Stone, Heart of a Shepherd by Roseanne Parry, How Oliver Olson Changed the World by Claudia Mills, The Magician’s Elephant by Kate DiCamillo, Red Sings From Treetops by Joyce Sidman, A Season of Gifts by Richard Peck, When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead, and Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin.

Our winner was Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin, with When You Reach Me as our only honor book.  Thanks to everyone who participated, to our special guests for sharing their experiences, and to Multnomah County Library for hosting.  By this time next week, we’ll know the real winner!

Note:  I should mention that the current committee members did not participate in the discussions of the 2009 books or the voting!
